Sometimes, it may be difficult to tell if an optical drive can write or rewrite a disc or if it is a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, because this information is not specified on the device itself. This is why Optical Info can help you. It provides you with information about an optical drive's capabilities, so you don't have to take it apart to find a label or to look it up on the Internet.

Once you download the application, you can run it right away, without going through an installation process. The executable is only 597 KB, which means that you may take it with you on a removable memory device and use it on other computers.

The user interface is designed to look like an optical disc. It contains a few options, for ejecting and closing the optical drive and for analyzing the loaded discs. Once analyzed, the application will tell you if the loaded disc is a CD or a DVD and so on. If you have more than one optical device, you may select them in a drop menu.

The capabilities of the selected drive are displayed in the lower region of the interface. Additionally, you can find the device's vendor, product ID, revision and vendor spec, on the left and right sides of the same interface.

Pros

The application displays information about the capabilities of an installed optical device. It also provides information about its vendor, product ID and more. You can run Optical Info on any computer, without going through an installation process.

Cons

It is not possible to export the provided information. Everything you need to know about an optical device can be retrieved with a single click, thanks to Optical Info's simple and straightforward functionality.
